Unbridled color expressions

Contemporary expressionism is an approach to painting that prioritizes emotion, intuition, gesture, and color over literal representation. Rooted in the expressive traditions of modern art, it embraces abstraction as a means of translating personal experience, atmosphere, and memory into a visual language.

My painting interpretations of contemporary expressionism are deeply rooted in my experiences along the California and Texas coastlines and in the Texas Hill Country, where expansive horizons, shifting light, atmospheric color, and the intertwining of land and water became etched in my visual memory. These coastal roots continually surface as loose visual references to shorelines, hills, horizons, water, and sky, deconstructed through my signature lyrical abstraction style. 

Rather than depicting a particular place, I distill the emotional experience of having been there. Through intuitive mark-making, layered surfaces, gestural movement, and expressive abstract compositions, recognizable landscape elements emerge and dissolve, ebbing and flowing much like the experience of the shoreline or standing high on a hill amongst low clouds. A horizon becomes a subtle division of color.  A hillside is reduced to a sweeping gesture. Water and sky present as atmospheric shifts in tone and luminosity. The result is contemporary expressionism that evokes a sense of place without confining the viewer to a single interpretation.

Coastal landscapes deconstructed through lyrical abstraction

Many of my paintings can be understood as atmospheric landscapes rooted in coastal experience. The expansive qualities of the California and Texas coastlines continue to influence the way I interpret scale, movement, and atmosphere, while my intuitive process allows each painting to develop organically through countless layers of hand-mixed pigments and inks and floating gestural marks.
